Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, who yesterday reacted to claims that he never went for the mandatory one year NYSC program, has further stated that he broke no law.
Adebayo Shittu, who spoke newsmen in Abuja yesterday, told those present that his case could not be compared to that of the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun. The Minister who is one of the All Progressives Congress(APC) governorship aspirants in Oyo State, spoke after being interviewed by the APC screening committee.
He told newsmen;
‘I left university in 1978 and left Law School in 1979. And the Constitution says anyone who qualifies to contest an election or who has gone through an election and wins, he is obligated to move through the House of Assembly which I did for four years. So it is a form of higher service as far as I’m concerned, and even now, I am still in service. I don’t think I have violated the law except someone has a superior argument and can prove it’.
He added that his case can’t be compared to that of Kemi Adeosun, because he didn’t present a fake NYSC certificate.
“Unfortunately, Kemi had a fake certificate, I didn’t present any, I didn’t have one. I simply followed the constitutional requirement that if you are qualified to contest an election, it is compulsory for you to serve the nation in the capacity that you won an election,” he said.
This is coming aweek after Kemi Adeosun was compelled to step down from her post as Nigeria’s finance minister after it was reported that she skipped national service, and then procured a fake exemption certificate to cover her tracks.
However it should be also noted that Section 12 of the NYSC Act, mandates all employers to demand the national service certificate of prospective employees before hiring. Section 12 of the Act.

According to Southern City News,a final year student of the Imo State University, Blessing Amam, was on Monday found dead alongside her lover, identified as Emeka in her hostel in Umudagu-Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.
Report has it that the deceased student was a final year student in the Department of Theatre Arts, who was expected to graduate in August.
It was learnt that she slept in her hostel room with her lover on Sunday but both of them could not wake up the next day (Monday).
A neighbour, who craved anonymity, said it was the smell from the deceased room that alerted other occupants who had returned from school that something was wrong.
She said,
“The students came back from school and started inhaling very offensive smell and on inquiry, it was discovered that it was from Blessing Amam’s room.
“Her flat mates called her but she did not respond. The door was forcefully opened and behold, Blessing and her lover were found dead. There were blood stains and marks on their bodies. Blood equally gushed out from their mouths and nostrils.”

The source, who expressed worry over the circumstances that could have led to the death of the suspected lovers, maintained that the deceased were full of life the night before, adding that there was no indication that they were in any trouble or distress in the room that night.
When our correspondent visited the hostel, nobody including the security guards was seen, as the whole compound including the street was deserted.
On inquiry, our correspondent was told that the students had fled because they did not want to be arrested by the police.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident said, “It was a case of sudden and unnatural death.”

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has been found to have skipped the mandatory national youth service scheme.
According to Premiumtimes, Shittu failed to participate in the NYSC scheme despite graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University at age 25. .
However, when contacted on Tuesday, he admitted that he did not serve but claimed he thought his first political post after graduation could suffice as national service.
The minister studied law at Ife, graduating in 1978. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, qualifying as a lawyer in 1979. .
But rather than enlist in the national service, Shittu went into politics after graduation, and was, in 1979, elected member of the Oyo State House of Assembly. .
The minister said he believed that having been elected lawmaker, he needed not participate in the national service. .

He said he deliberatively skipped the NYSC scheme because he was convinced that his membership of the state assembly was itself a “service”. .
“The constitution provides for the qualification needed for state assembly members, NYSC is not there,” Mr. Shittu said. “I didn’t need it to become a member of the state assembly, and that is already a service,” he said.
Despite not possessing certificate of national service, became the attorney general and commissioner for justice in his native Oyo State. He also served as member of the Oyo State Judicial Service Commission from 2004 to 2007.
In 2005, he was nominated minister by Buhari, and later assigned the communications portfolio upon legislative screening. He is now aspiring for governorship of Oyo State.

Our students were not killed by cultists – AAU ManagementThe management of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has denied reports that the killing of two of its students and three other persons were cult-related.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Edward Aihevba, disclosed this to The PUNCH while reacting to the incident on Thursday.

No fewer than five persons were shot dead by gunmen suspected to be cultists on Tuesday evening, after a fight ensued between two persons at a bar located around Judges’ Quarters, in the Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
One of them was said to have claimed that his shirt was torn during the brawl and left the scene angrily only to return later with a group of armed men who opened fire, killing five persons.
Among the deceased persons were a final-year medical student of the school, identified as Dr. Einstein Chinedum; the son of a former council chairman, Ose Abulu; a corps member, identified as one Ugwi Martha; and one Jerry Omobude.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, had told our correspondent on Wednesday that the incident was a clash between rival cult groups.
Kokumo had also said that no fewer than four suspects have been arrested while arms and ammunition were recovered from them.
But Aihevba explained, “The erroneous reports had it that some graduating students of the Ambrose Alli University, some said 12, 10 or six, were shot by cultists at a graduation party on campus. This was an incident that really happened in Ekpoma, among a group of friends in a bar.
“It happened far away from the campus. Because it was not on the campus, the police are the ones to investigate. We were not at the spot, so we rely on what the police saw and what their investigation confirmed.”

Davido is flouting NYSC rules by wearing PDP uniforms – Wale GatesDavido is a serving corps member and should abide by the rules and regulations of the scheme but there is one rule he is flouting and it has led to a debate on Twitter after comedian Wale Gates pointed it out.
According to the NYSC rules and regulations, serving corps members are not allowed to take part in partisan politics. Doing so attracts a penalty of 3 months without pay.
But Davido has been supporting his uncle who is contesting for the Governor of Osun state and has been photographed at rallies clad in the PDP uniform.

Wale Gates shared a photo of Davido in his NYSC uniform and another of him in a PDP uniform and added a screenshot of the NYSC rule being flouted by the popular singer. He then invited lawyers to discuss it.

But most people are of the opinion that there’s nothing to be discussed because Davido can well do without the three months meagre allowance.
